Sarah Phyllis Kornegay Lane, 66, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Phyllis was born in Decatur, Ga., April 23, 1945, to Margaret Smith Kornegay of Goldsboro and the late Philander "Flap" Kornegay.

She began her career as a teacher at Mount Olive Junior High School, where she also coached the girl's basketball team. Phyllis later taught at Southern Wayne High School, and after the birth of her daughter, she went to work with Cherry Hospital, and retired after 28 years of service.

Phyllis' primary goal in life was the happiness and security of her family. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, mema, daughter, sister, aunt and friend to so many. Phyllis always enjoyed spending time with her family, and could always be found supporting her grandsons at ballgames or wherever they were involved. Phyllis was their biggest supporter and fan.

She was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church. Phyllis always enjoyed visiting her church family and friends, and could often be found helping others in their time of need.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Falling Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Webb officiating. Interment will be Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the church cemetery.

In addition to her mother, Phyllis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Mike Edwards; her grandsons, who were the apples of her eye, Joshua and Justin Edwards; her sisters, Diane Mozingo of Goldsboro and Libby Parks and husband, Pete, of Goldsboro; her nieces and nephews, Phyllis Howell, Malinda M. Kroskie and husband, Mike, Rene Grantham and husband, Rick, Jeff Mozingo and wife, Penny, and Phillip Parks and wife, Megan; and several great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special lifelong friend, Edythe Blanton and husband, Arnold, of Dudley.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by Tracy's dad and her longtime friend, Thomas Gene Lane.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Falling Creek Baptist Church, 499 Falling Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

The family will receive friends Wednesday following the service at the church, and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, 634 Deer Acres Drive, Goldsboro.
