LAWTON, Okla. -- Retired Sgt. James P. Barnes, 83, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Chemanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Okla.

James Phillip Barnes was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Johnston County.

He attended Princeton School, and served in the United States Army for 20 years. He served in many parts of the United States and overseas. During his military career, he served in Vietnam, Indochina and Germany, retiring as a sergeant first class at Fort Sill, Okla.

Brother Barnes was known for his charitable acts to his church, Greater Galilee Baptist Church, and his veteran work. He was serving as president of Brotherhood Choir Sunday school ministry, hospitality ministry and as trustee.

He also was Inducted into Honorable Order of Jag's Layman group. James was a 32rd degree Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Mae Barnes and Caleb Joyner, and his wife, Ada Barnes.

Brother James P. Barnes leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Ms. Frances Scorboro of Princeton, N.C., and Ms. Dorothy Hnnant of Newark, N.J.; a special cousin, Dianna Sutton; and daughter. He is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held March 19, 2011, at Greater Galilee Church, with the Rev. James E. Thorton officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton, Okla.
