Nov. 1, 1939-Jan. 31, 2011

George William Smith Sr., also known as "Buck," 1005 Harris St., Goldsboro, formerly of Best Station, was born Nov. 1, 1939, to the late Thomas and Frances Holloway Smith of Best Station community in eastern Wayne County. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, George answered the heavenly roll call, and departed this life to be with his heavenly father.

Due to his parents' passion for education, George attended school in Wayne County, and was a 1959 graduate of Central High School in Goldsboro, N.C.

He was a bus driver, and an avid baseball player of which he often times bragged about how he was good enough to play with the pros, mainly the Washington Senators.

Nov. 18, 1959, he was united in holy matrimony to Minnie B. Waters. To this union were born three daughters and a son.

He began his career working locally, but due to his drive for freedom and openness, he soon embarked in career of trucking, which he continued for nearly 50 years.

In his field for which his handle was affectionately "The Green Frog," he was well known especially with the companies for which he worked. To name a few, Barnes Trucking, Archie Rose Trucking, Arrow, Tl Trucking, Jevic, Moss, Artic and Snyder, and most recently, Foss Auto and Salvage in LaGrange, N.C., where he remained until his health began to decline.

He was both trustee and bus driver for Holly Hill Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in which he grew up, and was a longtime member, carrying on a long family tradition.

He leaves a legacy of loved ones to cherish his memories. They include his daughters, Deborah Melinda (Elvin) Exum of LaGrange, N.C., Robin Inez (Carl) Andrews of Whiteville, N.C., and Bobbette Elise Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; son, George William (Jill) Smith Jr., of Mount Olive, N.C.; a brother, Leonard (Christine) Smith of LaGrange, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Esther (Herman) Lewis of Washington, D.C., and Rossie Bell and Barbara Best both of Goldsboro, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Eddie B. (Vickie) Waters of Goldsboro, N.C., an uncle, deacon P.H. Holloway of Goldsboro, N.C., three aunts-in-law, Mabel Holloway of Goldsboro, N.C., and eldress Geraldine Smith and Rosa Smith both of LaGrange, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m.

A service of remembrance will be held Friday at 12 noon at Holly Hill Church of Christ.

It was Monday evening that Mr. Smith received his final destination from the chief dispatcher, the Heavenly Father, and was told "breaker breaker one nine, thy good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, come on up, I'm now going to make you ruler over many ... over and out."

Services of compassion and distinguished class are rendered by E.M. Matthews Funeral Home.
