NORVELLA "VEL" BECK

Died May 16, 2010

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Norvella "Vel" Beck, 89, passed away peacefully Sunday.

Services will be private.

She was the beloved wife of retired Air Force Col. Charles J. Beck.

Born in Markleville, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Austin E. Judd and Florence Mauzy.

She attended Markleville High School and graduated magna cum laude from Butler University in 1943, where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and an active campus leader.

Following college, she worked for a brief time for American Airlines before marrying her husband.

Vel was a loving, dedicated Air Force wife for 33 years and had a wonderful, active life traveling the world as a result of her husband's military career.

She was an avid bridge player who achieved life master status -- the highest level of tournament play in duplicate bridge.

After retirement from the Air Force, the Becks resided in Sarasota, Fla., for 30 years before moving to Freedom Village in Bradenton, Fla. For the past five months, they lived in Punta Gorda, Fla., near their daughter.

Besides her beloved husband of 65 years, she leaves two children, Becky Bovell of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Thomas C. Beck of Eugene, Ore.; son-in-law, Paul T. Raffa; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her memory to TideWell Hospice at www.tidewell.org will be appreciated.
