ROWLAND L. VERNON

Rowland L. Vernon passed into eternal life May 4.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The family will greet friends following the service at Seymour Funeral Home before leaving for the graveside interment at 2 p.m. in Coastal Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Jacksonville.
He was born to Tom and Pauline Evans Vernon Oct. 4, 1946, in Clinton.
Rowland was a Vietnam-era veteran of the United States Air Force.
His subsequent life's work carried him to Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois and Virginia before returning to Goldsboro in 2005.
He was a graduate of Southern Wayne High School.
He worked part-time as a disc jockey for a Mount Olive radio station after school and served as an assistant trainer for Southern Wayne High School's sports programs.
As an Explorer Scout, Rowland was awarded a Freedom Foundation award for his essay on "The American Way of Life" in 1965.
He leaves behind his brother, James and wife, Yolanda, of Goldsboro; a sister, Rebecca Davis and husband, Don, of Richmond Va.; a sister, Paula Tomlinson and husband, John, of Raleigh; three special nephews, Barry and Steven Davis of Richmond and Johnathan Barnes of York, S.C.; and two special aunts, Rose Royal of Keener and Katy Mitchell and husband, J.B., of Clayton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army of Goldsboro, 610 N. William St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
