Died March 29, 2010

NEW BERN -- Christopher John Schlaeppi, 55, passed away peacefully Monday at home.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, 4718 Old Cherry Point Road in New Bern, with Father Sanford Sears officiating.

RHA Howell's Child Care/RiverBend, where he was employed for 30 years, was an important part of Chris' life. He worked with Irene Howell for 25 years before RHA merged with Howell's. He was instrumental in many of the programs being successful.

Chris was very involved in the forming and continued excitement of special needs baseball. He was also responsible for overnight field trips to Portsmouth Island and in partnership with Cape Lookout Mobile Sports Fishermen.

There was never any task too small or too big for Chris to give it his full attention.

Chris was a loving husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend.

Although his career was much of his life, he loved his family deeply.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lupe; his parents, Fernand Schlaeppi (originally from Basel, Switzerland) and Joann Schlaeppi (originally of London, England), who now reside in Greensboro; a son, Michael Christopher Schlaeppi of Charlotte; two daughters, Amanda Leigh Schlaeppi and Caroline Renee Schlaeppi both of Goldsboro; three stepdaughters, Cheyenne Mae Lester, Alannah Jade Lester and Edie Delaine Lester all of New Bern; a brother, Martin Fernand Schlaeppi of High Point; his sister, Paula Eileen King of Danbury, Conn.; and a grandson, Anthony Gavin Nadler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Howell's Child Care Center, 140 Pirates Road, New Bern, N.C., 28562.

Online condolences may be made at www.cottenfuneralhome.com.
