MOUNT OLIVE -- Carroll Winston Grimes, 83, 1920 Grimes Road, died early Thursday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leland Heath officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Born in Sampson County, he was the son of the late Earl VanDoren Grimes and Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Grimes. He was the widower of the late Jewel Sutton Grimes and father of the late Diane Grimes Odom.

Mr. Grimes was a longtime farmer in Wayne and Sampson Counties in Smith Chapel community and was a charter member of Smith Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from the fire department with 20 years of service.

He was a lifetime member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

He was proud to have served his country with the 160th Infantry Regiment, 40th division, during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands and served with the occupation forces in Korea. He was honorably discharged in December 1946 and became a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9959, and American Legion Post 0103. He was honored by the Daughters of the Confederacy with the Cross of Military Service in January 1991.

Mr. Grimes is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lois Hinson Brogden Grimes; his children, Carolyn Grimes Perry and husband, John, of Suttontown, Vickie Brogden Lee and husband, Hunter, of Raleigh and Stuart Brogden and wife, Robin, of Dudley; a brother, Rethel Grimes and wife, June, of Kinston; a brother-in-law, Nolan Hinson and wife, Jo Anne, of Smithfield; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Anderson and husband, Norwood, of Concord and Jewel Britt Halso of Hampstead; eight grandchildren, Richard Ryan Weeks and friend, Scott Kline, of Durham, Bradford Winston Weeks and fianceé, Erin Buckles, of Fairfax, Va., Jonathan Patrick Weeks of Alexandria, Va., James Carroll Roesch and wife, Terra, of Suttontown, Jessica Roesch Scott and husband, Matthew, of West Carteret, Travis Stuart Brogden of Dudley, David Hunter Lee Jr. and wife, Kristi, of Honduras and Samuel Stuart Lee of Raleigh; and three great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Emily and Preslee Roesch.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Marne Grimes, and two great-grandchildren, Baleigh Roesch and Elijah Scott.

Family members will greet friends tonight from 5 to 8 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home.
