GREENSBORO -- Martha Cardell Rue Gardner, 81, 4217 Farlow Drive, died March 16 at Greensboro Place.
A private ceremony will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Roy Blackwell Chapel of Blackwell Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
She was born in Goldsboro, the daughter of the late Alonza Rue and the late Letha Kornegay Rue, and was the wife of Nathaniel Rhodes Gardner Sr. of Greensboro.
Martha Gardner was a generous giver and supporter to the Trinity AME Zion Church of Greensboro.
She was a generous giver and supporter of friends and family who were sick or shut in.
She worked as a secretary for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T from 1951 to 1982.
She was a member of Trinity AME Zion Church since 1958.
Mrs. Gardner grew up in Goldsboro finishing as salutatorian at Dillard High School and completing college at North Carolina A&T in 1950. She pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority while at North Carolina A&T.
She married N.R. Gardner from Thomasville, Ga., in 1950.
She is survived by a son, N. Rhodes Gardner of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Rachelle Richardson of Smithfield; a brother, Alonza Rue Jr. (wife, Claudette) of Denver, Colo.; seven nieces; a nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Mae White, and a nephew.
Blackwell Funeral Home of Burlington is handling the arrangements.
