RUTH S. EMLET
June 18, 1920-Feb. 25, 2010
Ruth Slocumb Emlet, known as "Sloc," passed away Thursday.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
She was born June 18, 1920, to Charles Dewey Slocumb and Lydia Winslow Slocumb.
She attended Greensboro College and Duke University School of Nursing.
At Duke, she met Dr. Jack Emlet. They were married Aug. 9, 1947, and moved to Pensacola in 1954 when Jack joined the department of surgery at the Medical Center Clinic.
Over the years, Sloc was active in many local organizations, including the garden club and Escambia Medical Auxiliary, serving as president in 1964. Sloc enjoyed golf, boating, reading and truly had a green thumb when it came to gardening.
Sloc lived in Charlottes-ville, Va., from 2002 until last fall, when she returned home to Pensacola.
She is survived by daughter, Patricia Emlet and her husband, John Holdren; sons, Richard Emlet and Jon Emlet; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by Jack, who passed away in 1997; her daughter, Sally Kimmons; and brothers, Col. Charles Dewey Slocumb Jr. and William J. Slocumb.
Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel of Pensacola, Fla., is in charge of the arrangements.
