MOREHEAD CITY -- Robert Babb "Bert" Herring, 73, went home to be with the Lord Saturday at his home.

A funeral service will be held at St. Peter's United Methodist Church of Morehead City, with the Rev. Paul T. Stallsworth officiating, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Friends and neighbors will be received in the fellowship hall.

Visitation will be held at Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Willowdale Cemetery.

Bert was born in Wayne County to the late Victor Gray Jr. and Virginia Babb Herring.

Mr. Herring served his country in the United States Army and was retired from working in the community college system at Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro.

He enjoyed participating in the lay witness mission program within the United Methodist Church.

Bert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet Barfield Herring, and his brother, Victor Gray Herring III and wife, Ginny Herring, of Phoenix, Ariz.

Bert had five children; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; daughter, Gray H. Sullivan, and husband, Mac Sullivan, of Goldsboro; daughter, Leigh H. Lawson and husband, Darryl, of Mechanicsville, Va.; daughter, Melissa H. Walker of Rocky Mount; son, David Herring and wife, Michele, of Bowie, Md.; daughter, Betsy Herring deMaagd and husband, Chris, of Seattle, Wash.

The grandchildren include; Micah Sullivan and wife, Laura, David Sullivan, Joel Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan, Rebekah Sullivan, Janet Catherine Lawson, Gray Lawson, Justin Walker and wife, Amy, Holden Walker, Lindsey Walker, Drew Herring, Julianne Herring, Caroline Herring, Ava Herring, Charlie Herring deMaagd, Amos Herring deMaagd, Roy Herring de Maagd. Great-grandchildren are Mark and Taylor Walker and Ella Gray Sullivan.
