CARY -- Edward D. Shivers III died Saturday at Duke Hospital in Durham.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 117 S Academy St. in Cary. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.

He was born July 26, 1929, in Selma, Ala.

Ed grew up in Marion, Ala., where he graduated from Marion Military Institute High School and Junior College. Upon graduation from MMI, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans, La., where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and called to active duty during the Korean War.

He later obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in military science at the University of Omaha. During his 28-year military career, he served as a pilot and was in numerous command /staff positions and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Pringle Shivers; daughters, Leigh S. Swindle (Thomas) of Birmingham, Ala., Jeanne, S. Williams (Richard) of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Susan S. Junkins (Paul) of Cary; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held in the narthex one hour prior to the service.

Grandsons and sons-in-law will act as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers are all members of Lions Club International.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Cary, the North Carolina Lions Foundation and the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
