JAMES H. FARMER

James "Jim" Herbert Farmer, 89, went home to be with his Lord Thursday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard Toler officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.
Born in Pikeville, Tenn., he was the son of the late Jesse Eraz Farmer and Mary Anna Akin Farmer. Jim was married to the late Doris Bradshaw Farmer and they will be celebrating with the Lord their 64th anniversary Tuesday.
He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and was a veteran of the United States Marines, having served with the 1st Marine Division, Pioneer Battalion. During his time with the Marines, he fought in the South Pacific during World War II, participating in action against the enemy on Guadalcanal Island, Cape Gloucester and Peleliu.
He was very eager to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and did so through his membership at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where he was a member of and taught the Womble-Farmer Sunday school class. For many years he taught Sunday school for the Goldsboro Fire Department and for 40 years he was dedicated to the Gideons International, speaking at many churches across North Carolina and distributing thousands of Bibles.
Jim is survived by a son, Glenn Farmer and wife, Jeannie, of Niceville, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Evans and husband, Skip, of Niceville, Fla., and Claudia Russell and husband, David, of Dudley; two brothers, Clyde E. Farmer of Cowan, Tenn., and William Laster Farmer of Nashville, Tenn.; five sisters, Lillie Mines of Chattanooga, Tenn., Vera Hinshaw of Cowan, Tenn., Betty Harris of Cowan, Tenn., Mary Miller of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Peggy Lillicrap of Nashville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
