GERTRUDE H. JOHNSON

Gertrude Herring Johnson, 99, died Thursday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center just shy of her 100th birthday.

Funeral services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church with the Revs. Vernon Brown and Dr. Jerry A. Jackson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service in the church parlor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late William Abia and Emma Gertrude Hardy Herring and wife of the late Edward Leroy Johnson. She was a member of the Providence United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesley Sunday school class, Providence United Methodist Women and Providence Friends United.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Clyde Johnson of Newport News, Va., Rondal Johnson and wife, Jean, of Raleigh; two daughters, Dedamae J. Sullivan and husband, Cedric, of Goldsboro, Kathaleen J. Moss of Goldsboro; one sister, Clara H. Radcliff of Raleigh; 41 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, it was the wish of Mrs. Johnson that memorial gifts be directed to the Emergency Fund of Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
