SNOW HILL -- Ryan Douglas Kornegay, 17, passed away Saturday afternoon in the outdoors that he avidly enjoyed.

Funeral services for Ryan will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3010 Carey Road in Kinston. Interment will immediately follow at Pineview Cemetery, N.C. 111 south in Seven Springs.

Always one who loved hunting and fishing, Ryan had also cultivated an interest in golf and was a member of the golf team at Greene Central High School, where he was in his junior year.

Ryan was very devout in his faith and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kinston, already having committed himself to church missionary service for two years immediately following his graduation from high school.

A Boy Scout, he was completing his Eagle Scout project in order to obtain that badge and recognition of character and service it represents. His devotion to his faith, community and family will always be remembered as well as his love for his truck that he affectionately renamed "Kornegay."

Ryan is survived by his parents, Deb Brown Oakes and husband, Jesse of Snow Hill and Doug Kornegay and girlfriend, Donna Hinson, of Seven Springs; brothers, Russell Kornegay of Snow Hill and Randy Kornegay and wife, Jessica, of LaGrange; stepbrother, Brandon Clay Hinson of Rosewood; nephews, Rusty and Rylan Kornegay both of LaGrange; paternal grandfather, Marlow Kornegay of Seven Springs; stepgrandfather, Robert Nethkin of Seven Springs; stepgrandmothers, Joyce Oakes of Snow Hill and Peggy Wetherington of Goldsboro; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Ryan was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jimmy Brown and Roseleen Brown Nethkin, and stepgrandfather, Jesse Oakes.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service and other times at the home, 1422 Gurganus Road in Snow Hill.
