PRINCETON -- Thell Carlyle Rains, 86, former vice president with Rains Milling Company, died Friday evening at Johnston Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Princeton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Coppock officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Princeton Cemetery.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served as a cannoneer stationed in Rhineland and Central Europe. Thell was very active in his hometown of Princeton serving on the Town Council and as a firefighter for many years. He was also a leader in the Princeton United Methodist Church.

Born May 17, 1923, to the late Marion Butler "Buck" and Ethel Creech Rains of Princeton, Thell was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Grace Hardy Rains, on Feb. 22, 2009. Thell was also preceded in death by a son, Thell Hardy Rains; brothers, Marion Victor Rains Sr. and William Creech Rains Sr.; and a sister, Betty Hess.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his son, Donald Butler Rains and wife, Vicky Temple Rains of Princeton and grandchildren, Logan West Rains and Anna Elizabeth Rains. He is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews and special friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday at the Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family would prefer donations to the Princeton United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund, P.O. Box 116, Princeton, N.C. 27569.
