L. SIDNEY OWENS

LAGRANGE -- Leavy Sidney Owens, 91, of LaGrange, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with Scott Hardy and McGee Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. Owens was born Nov. 9, 1917, in Wilson County to the late Jack and Fannie Hamilton Owens. He was a retired farmer, carpenter and merchant. Mr. Owens enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, gardening, fishing and sharing time with family and friends. He was a member of Jason Presbyterian Church, where he attended regularly. Mr. Owens attended school in Saratoga and later LaGrange.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Sidney Owens Jr.; granddaughter, Cyndie M. White; wife, Gladys C. Owens; brother, Harvey Owens; and three sisters, Sadie Owens Varnell, Alice Owens Deans and Bertie Owens Gray.

Mr. Owens is survived by his soulmate and best friend, Mina L. Phelps; two daughters, Dorothy O. Chase and husband, Edwin, of LaGrange, Linda O. Hill and husband, Jeff, of Kinston; son, Billy K. Owens and friend, Jean Aman of Clinton; grandchildren, Sherry C. Whaley and husband, Johnnie, Edwin Chase Jr. and wife, Kristel, Janet O. Lane and husband, Jeff, Jeffrey Owens and wife, Debbie, Meagan Owens, Sonia Gray, John Owens, Jeremy Owens, Kim H. Barrow and Owen T. Hill; 10 great-grandchildren; and daughters-in-law, Faye Radford, JoAnne Owens, Betty Thigpen and Jennifer Owens.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Jason Presbyterian Church, c/o Belinda Hilbourn, 7989 Highway 903 S., LaGrange, N.C. 28551. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. The family will receive friends today from 1:45 until 2:45 at Rouse Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home of Edwin and Dorothy Chase, 691 Paul's Path Road, LaGrange.
