Bobby Eugene Overton Sr., 74, of 146 Paul Hare Road, died Friday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family. For the past year he fought a brave battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held this evening at 7 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Overton officiating. Family members will greet friends at the funeral home following the funeral service, and at other times at the home of Daryll and Linda Overton, 3178 U.S. Hwy. 13 S., in the Grantham Community.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Willie Roy and Nora Kelly Overton. He was a lifelong employee of Aaron Smith Trucking prior to retiring as detention officer for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Overton is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eunice Overton; five children, Daryll and Linda Overton of Grantham, Stanley Overton and Robin Anderson of Dudley, Jeannie and Randy Myers of Mount Olive, George Overton and Felicia Coker of Grantham, Bobby Jr. and Angelia Overton of Seven Springs; 10 grandchildren, Tina Kornegay, Jessica Gray, Sabrina Overton, Michelle Kornegay, John Robert Overton, Bobby Ray Overton, Roy Overton, Billy Overton, Taylor Glance and Rose Lindsey; four great- grandchildren, Daniel Kornegay, Landry Kornegay, Leah Overton and Jaylin Overton; two brothers, Jimmy and Faye Overton of Dudley, David and Elaine Overton of Jacksonville; a sister, Dorothy Odom of Biloxi, Miss.; and one sister-in-law, Martha Overton of Mount Olive.

In lieu of flowers, the Overton family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
