ARTHUR OWEN GOFF

Feb. 6, 1941 - July 24, 2009

Arthur O. Goff, 68, of 3178 Hwy. 111 N., passed away Friday morning at the Mount Olive Care Facility.

He was a retired brick mason for GOFF Masonry Contractors.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war from Nov. 29, 1963 to Dec. 2, 1965. Four months of his service was in combat with Company C including the battle of Ia Drang on Nov. 14, 1965 when without regard for his own safety, he exposed himself repeatedly to open fire to bring fallen comrades back to safety. Six months after his discharge, he received the Bronze Star with "V" device for his heroism in Vietnam.

He is survived by three sisters, Diana Goff Edwards of Goldsboro, Linda Goff Jernigan and husband, Tommy, of Goldsboro, and Doris Jean Williams and husband, Roland, of Rosewood; two brothers, Milton J. Goff of Fremont, and Alton Eugene Goff and wife, Mary, of Texas; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Milton McCoy Goff and Vioda Bass Goff, and one brother, Wayne McCoy Goff.

Visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Eureka Cemetery.
