MOUNT OLIVE -- Mr. Wilson K. "Hooty" Lewis, 89, died on May 15, after a sudden illness. He was a life-long resident of Mount Olive and a well known and beloved member of the community.

He was born Oct. 5, 1919, earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1934, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina Pharmacy, class of 1941. While in Chapel Hill, his blood was found to have turned "Carolina Blue."

He owned and operated Lewis Drug Co. in Mount Olive from 1944 until his retirement in 1995. He was devoted to his job as a pharmacist, membership in the Rotary Club, Mount Olive Baptist Church, playing golf and supporting Carolina athletics. His last day was spent scoring an 83 on the golf course, seeing his granddaughter off to the prom, and shooting hoops with his grandson.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bersha Lewis; daughter, Suzanne Lewis; and son, Wilson K. Lewis Jr. and his wife, Carlia. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Will, Hannah, and Casey; a brother, Robert H. Lewis of Raleigh; and sister, Katherine Childrey of Smithfield.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Mount Olive. Visitation will follow the service at the church and at other times at the home. All friends and former customers are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Mount Olive College Men's Basketball Fund, c/o Bill Clingan, 586 Henderson St., Mount Olive, N.C. 28365, or to the charity on one's choice.

Arrangement are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.
