Magruder Hampton Best, 84, of Goldsboro went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 23, 2008, at his home. He was married to the late Rubie Naylor Best and was the son of the late Mack and Nellie Best of Sampson County.

He was a World War II veteran and served his country in Italy for 18 months. He worked as a mechanic most of his life, retiring from Coble Dairy in 1984. He cherished his church family at Mays Chapel Church as well as his many friends and neighbors. So many came to him through the years for help with a tractor, a truck or a car motor. He always offered a lending hand without hesitation. It was his joy to use his talents and skills to serve others.

He was the proud father of three sons, and two daughters-in-law, Robert Wayne Best, Thomas and Lynn Best of Clinton, Ken and Wanda Best of Clayton; and one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Douglas Head of Pikeville. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Jimmy Best and wife, Mary, Valerie Cantrell and son, Kenny, Shannon Best, Erica and Pat Faircloth and son, Tyler, and Tracie Head. In addition, he leaves behind several brothers and sister-in-law to whom he served as a surrogate father and their spouses Helen and Leslie Potts, Johnny Murphy and Mary Naylor, Betty and Frank Pittard and David and JoAnn Naylor.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home at 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mays Chapel Church, with Pastor Jeff Daughtry officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. At other times, the family will receive friends at 811 Lynch Drive, Goldsboro.
