CALYPSO -- Cecil Marion Langley, 80, died Thursday evening at SunBridge Care Center in Mount Olive.
Services will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Calypso Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Chris Currie will officiate and interment will follow in the Calypso Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 7 until 9 p.m., and at other times at the residence.
Mr. Langley had served in the U.S. Army in 1946 and 1947, and again in 1950 and 1951. He was a past member of the American Legion Post 374 in Calypso, and was currently a member of American Legion Post 103 in Mount Olive where he was past commander. He was a retired member of the Calypso Volunteer Fire Department and was a former town commissioner and town manager for the Town of Calypso. He was a member of the Mount Olive Exchange Club and was a retired member of the Duplin County Planning Board on which he had served for 22 years. He was a long-time member of the Calypso Presbyterian Church where he had been an elder, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. In 2007 he was named an Outstanding Older Adult by the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina and in 2006 was awarded the North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service by the Duplin County Board of Commissioners. In 1993, he received a commendation from then Governor James B. Hunt in appreciation for his volunteer services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston Cecil and Sallie Carawan Langley; his wives, June Guy Langley and Lillian Barwick Langley; a brother, Rudolph "Buddy" Langley; and two sisters, Meredith Spencer and Nellie "Tiny" Kennedy.
He is survived by two daughters, Cecile L. Mooney and husband, Rick, of Greensboro, Debbie L. Jones and husband, Steve, of Calypso; two sons, Craig Langley and wife, Carol, of Calypso, Michael Langley of Bolivia; a stepson, Hampton B. Lee of the home; a brother, George Langley of Florida; a sister, Lila Barnhill of Castle Hayne; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are special family friends, Keith Hewett of Bolivia and Sharon Smith of Dudley.
