MOUNT OLIVE -- Elias James "Jay" Bundy Sr., 81, died Friday at Wake Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive with Dr. Dennis Atwood and the Rev. Anthony Z. Gurganus officiating. Interment will follow in the Martin-Price Cemetery.

Friends and family will be received at the residence at 221 West Park Ave. in Mount Olive today from 4-8 p.m.

Mr. Bundy was a retired agri-businessman with numerous farming and produce interests, a pioneer in many farming facets including irrigation methods and is remembered for his "Bundy Boy" potatoes and "Bundy Berries" referring to his pick-your-own strawberry farms.

A community and civic-leader, he was very active in the Jaycees, being a charter member of the Mount Olive Jaycees, serving in several capacities on the local, state, and national levels, and was named National Director of the Year.

He was an active Rotarian, a member of the Wayne County Industrial Development Commission, and was a past alderman for the Town of Mount Olive. He chaired the Harold S. Precythe Golf Tournament for 13 years, providing scholarship funds for area students. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed piloting, and the game of golf.

Very active in the First Baptist Church, he served as deacon, trustee, and on the finance and pulpit/personnel committees, and led the building committee for the educational building and sanctuary renovations.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Causey Bundy; a daughter, Mary Jo Lambert of Mount Olive; a son and daughter-in-law, E. J. "Jay" and Susie Bundy Jr. of Mount Olive; two grandchildren and one grandchild-in-law, Jim Lambert of Mount Olive and Dr. Jeni L. and Scott Clingan of Winston-Salem; three step-daughters and step-sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Harland Altman of Aynor, S.C., Carol and Keith McDowell, and Alice and James Powell, all of Conway, S.C.; three step-grandchildren, Beth Altman, Joshua Altman, and Derrick McDowell; and a step-great-granddaughter, Lexie Altman.

Loved ones preceding him in death include his first wife and the mother of his children, Josephine Price Bundy; his parents, Olliver Josiah and Maude Martin Bundy; his brother, Willard McCan Bundy, and a step-granddaughter, Paige McDowell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church - Bundy Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 239, Mount Olive, N.C. 28365, or the charity of one's choice.
