John Darby Wood, 66, died peacefully at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Saturday. He is survived by a son, Adlai Broadhurst and wife, Ann Everett Wood; daughters, Sarah Lockhart Wood and Frances Oliver Wood; grandsons, Adlai Broadhurst Wood Jr., and John Darby Wood II; a sister, Sue Wood Ferguson and her husband, Kenneth; stepbrother, Clark Young and wife, June; stepsister, Claire Talley and husband, Jim. He was preceded in death by Sarah Broadhurst Wood and John Darby Wood, Jr.

A native of Kentucky, he was the son of the late J.B. Wood and Frances Darby Wood. Mr. Wood graduated from Smithfield high school in 1958 and attended Virginia Military Institute. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill Law School in 1965 and practiced law in Goldsboro for over 40 years. He was a member of the Goldsboro City School, President of Wayne County Economic Development Commission, President of Goldsboro Committee of 100, Member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wayne County Red Cross, Chairman of Wayne Country Day School, Member of Board of Directors of Walnut Creek Country Club and Goldsboro Country Club, member of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge 139 B.P.O.E. and Member of Goldsboro Military Affairs Committee.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit the family at the home between 6 and 8 p.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wayne County Day School, 480 Country Day Road, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534, or Walter Reed Society-Operation Iraqi Freedom Fund for wounded troops, P. O. Box 59611, Attn: Dan Bullis, Walter Reed Station, Washington, D.C. 20012.
