E. BERKEY WALTERS

LAGRANGE -- Edward Berkey Walters, 80, of 507 West Washington St., died Thursday at his home. Berkey was born in Lenoir County to the late Walter Lee Walters and Betty Anderson Walters. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Margaret Ann Crocker Walters; and a son, Edward Berkey "Eddie" Walters Jr. Berkey served the town of La Grange as Director of Public Utilites and Building Inspector from 1948-2006. He served thirty three years with the LaGrange Fire Department and from 1970-1981 he served as Fire Chief. Berkey was a member of LaGrange Christian Church and the Goldsboro Elks Lodge #139. He was the first president of the Lenoir County Firemans Association and from 1989-2004, he was chairman of the Lenoir County Fire & Rescue Task Force.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Rouse Funeral Home with the Revs. Dexter Wasson and Gerald Stacy officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Berkey is survived by a daughter, Lois Ann Sullivan and husband, Gary, and a granddaughter, Nikki Sullivan. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Lee Walters, Jr. and Johnny Walters; and two sisters, Edna Mae Stowe and Elizabeth Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Rouse Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Sullivan, 3645 Willie Measley Road, LaGrange. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to LaGrange Fire Department, P.O. Box 603, LaGrange, N.C. 28551. Arrangements are with Rouse Funeral Home, LaGrange.
