BERRY THORNTON

Berry Mott Thornton, 80, formerly of Wilmington, died Saturday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Thornton was born in Sampson County to the late William Robert Thornton and Lula Mae Jackson Thornton. He had retired from Sears and Roebuck prior to his death. Mr. Thornton served in the United States Navy during World War II, was a former member of Wrightsboro United Methodist Church in Wilmington, and was a member of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church in Goldsboro. Mr. Thornton was a member of the Harium Lodge #98 A.F. & A.M. in Clinton, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Sudan Temple, the Arab Shrine Club, the Choo Choo Shrine and the Elks Lodge #522 B.P.O.E.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grandview Memorial Park in Clinton with Masonic rites. The Rev. Bill Haddock and the Rev. Glenn Everett will officiate.

Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife, Catherine Padgett Thornton; his son, Robert Wesley Thornton and wife, Kay of Smithfield; his daughter, Carol Johnson and husband, James Arnold of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Troy Glenn Johnson, Susan Thompson and husband, Russell; and two great-grandchildren, Alex Thompson and Kendall Thompson. He is also survived by his step-children, Bobbi Bannerman, Rhonda Cooper and Bruce Padgett, and several step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Olive Flumm Thornton.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children Hospital, P.O. Box 490, New Bern, N.C. 28560.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
