NEAL W. SEEGARS

Neal Washington Seegars, 86, died Sunday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery with the Rev. Thurman Horney and the Rev. JoAnn Turner officiating.
Mr. Seegars was born in McBee, S.C., Aug. 18, 1920, to the late Mary Newman Simmons and Lesley Simmons and Neal W. Seegars and Kate Seegars.
He was a graduate of Belhaven High School and was a 1942 graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in agriculture. While in college, he was a member of the Army ROTC and upon graduation, immediately entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant. He fought in the China-Burma-India Theatre of World War II until its conclusion in 1945, where he earned the Bronze Star for gallantry.
Upon his discharge from active duty, he came to Wayne County as assistant agricultural agent in 1946, where he met Peggy Majette. They were married in July of 1946. He continued his military commitment in the Army Reserves retiring in 1966 as a lieutenant colonel.
In 1949, he left the Wayne County Agricultural Exten-sion Service and bought the Farmers Supply Co. in Goldsboro. He and his two partners operated the hardware store until October of 1961 when he bought them out and opened Seegars Hardware.
In 1968, he closed the hardware store and opened Seegars Fence Co. at its current location on 1400 South George Street. During his business career, he has been involved with many civic organizations. He was president of the Lions Club, a mason, president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Committee of 100 and member of the Elks Lodge. Mr. Seegars was a lifelong outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Majette Seegars; son, Wes Seegars and wife, Jacque; daughter, Beth Seegars Fisher and husband, Hervey; his brother, Joe Seegars and wife, Ann; his grandchildren, Ben Seegars and wife, Rebecca, Sallie Seegars Batchelor and husband, Bobby, John Seegars, Logan Fisher and Taylor Fisher; and a great-grandchild, Benjamin Weston Seegars Jr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Feher.
Memorials may be made to the history committee of St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, 27534.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his residence.
