MARTHA Z. ULMER

CHAPEL HILL -- Martha Zealy Ulmer, 81, died Monday.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church of Chapel Hill. A reception will follow at the church.

She was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Goldsboro to Dr. Albert Hazel and Bertha Zealy. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1945, she accepted a secretarial position in the physics department at Princeton University. She completed two years of graduate studies in social work at Simmons College of Boston, Mass., interning at New England Medical Center, Tufts University.

Returning to North Carolina, she worked as a medical social worker at Duke Hospital and subsequently worked at the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She married Dr. David H.B. Ulmer Jr. in 1953.

Mrs. Ulmer moved to Chapel Hill in 1959. She worked for City Planning and Architectural Associates until her retirement, living the last 47 years there.

As a longtime member of University Presbyterian Church, she was active in volunteer projects.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Ulmer of Chapel Hill; a brother, Dr. James M. Zealy of Goldsboro; and nieces and nephews including A.H. Zealy III, E. Eugene Jones, J. Reid Jones, Carol Zealy Goss and James M. Zealy Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, Texas, 75244.

Arrangements are being handled by Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
