Janet Sanborn Best, 90, died Thursday evening at her home.

Mrs. Best was born in Port Gamble, Washington, on March 31, 1916, to the late Edward Talbot Sanborn and Genevieve Israel Sanborn. Most of her childhood was spent in East Machias, Maine. She also lived with her aunt and uncle in Honolulu, Hawaii, for two years prior to moving to Goldsboro. Following her graduation from Randolph-Macon Woman's College, she taught math at Goldsboro High School. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women and served as elder and in many other capacities. She served on the board of Kirkwood Retirement Community. An avid gardener, Mrs. Best was a member of the Garden Club and also did work at the Elizabethian Gardens in Manteo. She was one of the founding members of The Book Club in Goldsboro that was formed in 1942. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames.

A memorial service will be held today at 4:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Drew Clark officiating. Private inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Mrs. Best is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Marcellus James Best II; her sons, Jay Best and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro: and Frank Best and wife, Missy, of Goldsboro; her sister, Sally Riddle of Morganton; and her grandchildren, Marc Best, Lewis Best, Emily Best, Samuel Best, Virginia Best, Sarah Best and Frank Best, Jr. She is also survived by her first cousin, Libby Cobb and husband, Stan, of Martinsville, Va.; and her sister-in-law, McArn Best of Goldsboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Bobbie Ann Wilkins.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

Friends may greet the family at their homes here in Goldsboro.
