DOROTHY A. KIRBY

Feb. 12, 1919-July 7, 2006

Dorothy Aycock Kirby, of Nahunta, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2006, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, after a long illness with multiple myeloma.

Dorothy was born Annie Dorothy Aycock on February 12, 1919, in Wayne County to the late Milford Aycock and Annie Eugenia Coor Aycock She was married to the late Charles Walton Kirby Jr. (1925-1991) on December 20, 1950, at Nahunta Friends Meeting.

Mrs. Kirby was a teacher for more than thirty years. Dorothy left home at the age of 15 to attend Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), where she graduated in 1937. Mrs. Kirby received her master's degree in Zoology from the University of North Carolina, being one of the first two women admitted in the Zoology Department.

She taught in High Schools in Kannapolis and Wilmington, North Carolina, before working for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction during W.W.II. After the War, she moved from Raleigh to Charlotte, where she met Mr. Kirby while they taught together on the faculty of Charlotte Central High School. While raising her children and being a tireless homemaker, Mrs. Kirby then taught Zoology at Charlotte College, and was on the original faculty of UNC-Charlotte. She then returned to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, teaching Biology at Independence and Garinger High Schools until her retirement. Mrs. Kirby was an award-winning teacher at Independence High School, and was instrumental in starting a greenhouse and building the horticulture curriculum at Garinger High School.

After her retirement she returned to her Wayne County home to live. She loved her life in the Nahunta Community, enjoying gardening, canning, cooking and being close to the land. She was active in the Nahunta Home Extension Club, and returned often to the Nahunta Friends Meeting where she had attended church and Sunday School as a child.

Funeral services will be held at Nahunta Friends Meeting on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Ken Spivey, Nahunta Friends Meeting, and Rev. P. Joseph Ward, West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Aycock Family Cemetery, Route 222, Fremont.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Eugenia Kirby Stine, and husband, Gary, of Bristol, Virginia; her sons, Charles Walton Kirby III, and wife, Debora, of Hockessin, Delaware; and Milford Kendrick Kirby and wife Barbara, of Garner, North Carolina; her brother, M. Edmund Aycock, and wife, Elizabeth, of Raleigh; grandchildren Corbin Ann Kirby and husband Kirill Adzigirey of Springfield, Massachusetts; Meagan Kendrick Kirby of Alexandria, Virginia; Jamie Elizabeth Crawford of Hockessin, Delaware; Ashley Jeanne Kirby, of Garner, North Carolina; Dale Audry Stine and Christopher Lynn Stine of Bristol, Virginia; and many loving family members, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends at Seymour Funeral Home, Goldsboro, North Carolina, from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2006.
