JAMES V. MURCHISON

James Victor Murchison, 90, a Friends (Quaker) minister for over 67 years, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at the Friends Homes at Guilford.

A memorial service will be conducted at High Point Friends Meeting, where he was a member, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. by ministers David Millikan, David Hobson, Billy Britt, and Leslie Winslow. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall. Inurnment will be at the Pleasant Hill Christian Church cemetery, Liberty, N.C.

Mr. Murchison was the third son of William David and Dora Pike Murchison of Liberty. He received his formal education at Sylvan High School and Elon College, with post graduate study at High Point College and Emory University Divinity School. He was recorded (ordained) as a Friends minister by the Western Quarterly Meeting of North Carolina Yearly Meeting in 1938. He began a dual career as teacher at the Providence High School of Climax, N.C., and as pastoral minister at the Science Hill and Bethel Friends Meetings in Randolph County and Chatham and Spring Friends Meetings, Snow Camp, N.C. Following his service as associate pastor of the Suffolk, Virginia Christian Church, he continued his effective and inspiring pastoral ministry for twenty-two years at the Winston-Salem Friends Meeting. This was followed by three years as the Executive Secretary of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends. He continued his caring pastoral ministry with the Friends Meetings of New Hope in Goldsboro, N.C., Asheboro, Forsyth in Winston-Salem, and High Point. His preaching ministry was complemented by his singing ministry and his service through the Quaker Men's organization. He was an active member of the Exchange Club.

He and his wife of 59 years, Marian Kirkman Murchison, have lived at Friends Homes at Guilford, New Garden Road, Greensboro, N.C., since 2000.

Survivors include his devoted wife Marian, a sister, Josephine M. Painter and husband James Painter; sister-in-law, Mary Kirkman Routh and husband Charles Routh; several nieces and nephews, and special friend, David Millikan of Archdale, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Glenn and Samuel Murchison.
