Died June 23, 2006

COLUMBIA -- Services for Edwin Ray Gardner, 84, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Visitation will be at the funeral home 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.

A Christian burial will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Willow Dale Cemetery, Goldsboro.

Memorials may be made to Rotary Club of Forest Acres, P.O. Box 6402, Columbia, S.C. 29260.

Mr. Gardner died Friday, June 23, 2006.

Born in Goldsboro, N.C., he was a son of the late Henry Bell and Lula Orton Gardner. A U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, he served in the Pacific Theater and retired as a Captain in the Navy Reserve. He was a highly respected executive with The Hartford Insurance Group, serving as the southeast regional manager and retiring after a distinguished career of thirty-five years.

Mr. Gardner was a founding member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. He was a member of Forest Acres Rotary Club, Navy League of the United States and the Military Order of the World Wars.

Surviving are his wife, June Ennis Gardner; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen R. Gardner, M.D. and Leslie Padgett Gardner of Greenville; daughter, Teresa Gardner of Charlotte, N.C.; grandsons, Christopher Galen Gardner and his wife, Julia Long Gardner, of Salisbury, Md. and Jonathan Parks Gardner, M.D. of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Gardner, Philip Jonathan Gardner and Ansley Long Gardner, all of Salisbury, Md.
