HIRAM CUTHRELL

SALISBURY -- Hiram J. Cuthrell, a former resident of Goldsboro, died earlier this month as a result of a stroke which occurred on April 25.
Mr. Cuthrell was a native of Belhaven and was the son of the late William Wilson Cuthrell and Rosa F. Lee Cuthrell. He was a graduate of Selma High School and Oak Ridge Military Institute, with a two-year degree in business administration. He served in the 11th Airborne Division in World War II and served in the occupying army of Japan. He later joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1949, retired as a lieutenant colonel, and was a life member of The Retired Officer's Association.
He worked in banking and was employed by several banks, including Branch Banking and Trust of Goldsboro, and later worked for Rives Motor Company as credit manager.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Lions Club and was selected for the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, one of the highest awards in the Lions Club, in 1996.
Mr. Cuthrell was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Cuthrell, and a son, Hiram J. Cuthrell Jr.
He is survived by one daughter, Lee Cuthrell Spada of Northridge, Calif.; one son, William V. Cuthrell of Louisville, Ky.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury. Dr. Thomas L. Griffis will officiate. The family will receive friends afterward in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury or to the Disabled American Veterans.
