MOUNT OLIVE -- Carnice Barfield Pettit, 37, of 470 Cricket Ridge Road died Thursday at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

She was born in Wayne County to Walter Jr. and Nannie Miller Barfield.

She graduated from Southern Wayne High School in 1988 and Fayetteville Community College in 1989 with a degree in funeral service education.

She was a funeral director and embalmer with Garris Funeral Home in Mount Olive. She was a member of the National and State Funeral Directors Association. She served as secretary and president of the Cape Fear Funeral Directors Association. She was also a member of Eastern Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Praise Team and Choir.

A homegoing celebration will be held Monday at 12 p.m. from the Bear Creek Missionary Baptist Headquarters Association, 1800 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro, with the Rev. Timothy Dortch officiating. Entombment will follow in the Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by daughter, RaShonte A. Pettit of the home; sister, McKale Barfield-Best and husband Ricky of Goldsboro; brother, Terry Wynn and wife Janice of Mount Olive; niece, Watia Best of Goldsboro; nephews, Mondarius Best and Tyquan Best of Goldsboro, Arthur Cousins and Tevin Wynn of Mount Olive; uncles, Roy Lee (Mildred) Miller of Kinston, Preston Miller of Warsaw, John Barfield Sr. of Mount Olive, Joseph (Hedwig) Barfield of Fayetteville, Alton (Evelyn) Barfield of Raleigh and Thomas (Everlena) Barfield of Dudley; aunts, Annie M. Kornegay of Warsaw, Shirley (Climent) Mills of Kinston, Eva Miller of Magnolia, Lela (Joe) King of Faison, Valentine Barfield of Calypso and Juanita Barfield of Goldsboro, and numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Viewing will be held Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Garris Funeral Home Chapel and two hours prior to funeral service at the Bear Creek Missionary Baptist Association Head-quarters on Monday.

Family will receive friends at the home of her parents Walter Jr. and Nannie Barfield, 209 Lee's Country Club Road, Mount Olive.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carnice's memory to RaShonte Pettit Scholarship Fund, Bank of America, 213 N. Chestnutt St., Mount Olive, N.C. 28365.
