RUTH CARTER TARKENTON

Dec. 27, 1909-April 11, 2006

ROPER -- Ruth Carter Tarkenton, 96, of 11541 N.C. Highway 32 North, died Tuesday, April 11, at home.

A Duplin County native, she was the daughter of the late Owen C. and Octavia Murvin Carter and the widow of Thomas W. Tarkenton. She attended Elon College, William and Mary College and East Carolina University and retired as a registered public health nurse with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. She was a member of the N.C. Association of Educators and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Roper. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Helen Tarkenton

Survivors include one daughter, Ann T. Collins of Roper; one son, Robert O. Tarkenton of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Louise Carter Bullock of Mount Olive; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted on Thursday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Roper, with the Rev. Frank Alexander and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
