Sarah Smith McNay, "Betsy," 77, of Morehead City, died Tuesday after a brief illness and a courageous fight at Carteret General Hospital.

She was born and raised in Durham to the late Royal Wright and Nettie Garner Smith. She retired from O'Berry Center in Goldsboro, and in recent years, had spent all of her waking moments dealing in antiques. Betsy truly loved Morehead City, and calling it her home.

She was a wonderful wife, Mom, Grandma, and a true friend to many. She loved life and was known to all as such a wonderful optimistic person. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, the beach, and in her time, was quite the golfer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Billy" McNay, two brothers, Egbert and Chris Smith, and her son, Perry McNay.

She is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Thomas, Louise Dowling, and Alice Thomas; two sisters-in-law, Marge Jones, and Mrs. Cliff Garrard; two sons, Tim Knowles of Sanford and TomMcNay and wife, Nancy of Boiling Springs; a daughter, Laura K. Tucker and husband, Doug of Durham; four grandchildren, Greg Ferrell Jr. and wife Michelle, Jennifer F. Downey and husband, Ray, Allen McNay, and Bonnie Reaves and husband, David; and four great-grandchildren, Josie and Noah Ferrell, Blake Downey and Whitney Reaves.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today at The Train Depot, 1001 Arendell St., in downtown Morehead City.
