DOVER -- Neil Bernard Howell, Sr., 82 of 111 Wilson St., died Thursday at the home of his daughter, Ann Rains, 221 Causeway Road, Atlantic Beach.

He was retired from Cherry Point where he was an aircraft electrician. Mr. Howell was a member of the Dover United Methodist Church and a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was past Town Alderman of Dover and was a member of the CCC's during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Whitley Howell, his son, Neil B. Howell, Jr. and a great granddaughter, Raine Braxton. A loving father, grandfather and a friend to many, he will be greatly missed.

A funeral service was held 7 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Garner Funeral Home. The Reverends Leland Heath and Joseph Parker officiated. Interment will be held 2 p.m. today at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Rains and husband, Sonny of Atlantic Beach; four grandchildren, Michelle French of Dover, Sam Howell and wife, Penny of Dover, Kim Rains of Atlantic Beach, Buck Rains and wife, Jennie of Atlantic Beach; six great-grandchildren, Eddie Braxton and friend, Sophia Shelton of Newport, Kristopher Braxton of Atlantic Beach, Renee Hill and husband, Ricky of Kinston, Meredith Rains of Atlantic Beach, Summer Rains of Atlantic Beach, Hannah Howell of Dover; a great-great-grandson, Dylan Hill of Kinston; a daughter-in-law, Amy Howell of Newport; and a special friend, Kathleen Whitley.

The family received friends immediately following the service Saturday evening at the funeral home. At other times, they will be at his home, 111 Wilson Street, Dover.
