REV. WALTER PIERCE

BENSON -- The Rev. Walter Raleigh Pierce, 79, died Wednesday.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield. The Reverends Robert Flynn and Meagan Matthews will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.

Rev. Pierce was born in Bertie County to the late Loy Van and Annie Lyon Pierce. He was the owner and president of Oasis Rest Homes Inc. and was an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church He served on the Heritage Bible College Board of Directors and was former member of the Campbell University Presidential Advisory Board. He was a member of Dunn Rotary Club and was a former member of Benson Kiwanis Club and the North Raleigh Exchange Club. He also served as state chairman of the Christian Coalition for Pat Roberts and Ralph Reeves for the Christian Broadcasting Network.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Keith Buckner and Jacque and Andrew Wheeler of Benson; sisters, Ola Barbour of Burlington and Llewella Kelly of Roanoke Rapids, and Rose Stone of Dunn; brother, Steve Pierce of Kernersville; and granddaughter, Lindsey Wheeler.

The family will receive friends tonight form 7 until 9 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson and other times at the home of Jacque and Andrew Wheeler, 1171 Tarheel Road, Benson.
