LAGRANGE -- Jesse Ray Farmer Sr., 69, of 3658 Pauls Path Road, died Sunday following a long battle with cancer.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Kinston, where he was a member. The Rev. Archie Ratliff and Rev. Lawrence Taylor will officiate. The committal service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Farmer was born in Lenoir County to Sadie Hardison Farmer and the late Drew Farmer. He farmed and retired from E.I. DuPont with 29 years of service. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne Elmore Farmer; two sons, Jesse "Ray" Farmer Jr. and wife Pamela Jarnagin Farmer of LaGrange, Michael Keith Farmer and wife Betsy Kearney Farmer of Knightdale; six grandchildren, Jessica, Megan, Sara, Caitlin, Hannah and Jesse Farmer; two sisters, Vivian Layden and husband Griffin of LaGrange and Patricia Everett and husband, George of Kinston.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Humphrey and Jean Carlyle.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service on Tuesday night, and other times at the residence.
