JAMES W. NEWSOME

April 12, 1913-Feb. 4, 2006

Retired Col. Wyatt Newsome, former commander of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, died Saturday.

He was born in North Wilkesboro and grew up in Lexington. He graduated from law School at Wake Forest University and joined the Army Air Corp. After serving at posts around the U.S. and foreign countries, he and his wife, Gertrude, retired to Cape Carteret, They recently moved to Raleigh to be near their son, Jim Newsome.

In addition to his wife and son, Col. Newsome is survived by two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one sister.

Visitation will be at Pollocksville Presbyterian Church 30 minutes prior to the graveside service that will be held Sunday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m., in the Pollocks-ville Cemetery.
