LAGRANGE -- Durwood Gene Lane, 68, of 3108 Jenny Lind Road, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Durwood was born in Wayne County to the late G.W. and Mavin Wray Lane. He served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne, and retired from the Maintenance Department at Cherry Hospital. An avid outdoorsman, Durwood was a professional field trial dog handler and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a devoted fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

A service to celebrate Durwood's life will be held at the Durwood Lane home Monday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Bill Rose will officiate.

Durwood is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Lane Davenport of LaGrange; two grandchildren, Jessie Rhae Rasnake and Mary Jane Davenport; five brothers, Kenneth Lane of Smithfield, William S. "Bill" Lane of Cleveland, John Lane of Warrenton, Mo., Jake Lane of Angier and Robert Lee Lane of Irvin, Texas; two sisters, Beulah Jackson of Mount Olive and Katherine "Cat" Tarlton of Goldsboro; special family friend, Sammy Ford.

Durwood was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann "Pat" Lane Dyess.

The family will receive friends at the Durwood Lane home today from 3 until 6 p.m.

Arrangements are with Rouse Funeral Home, LaGrange.
