The funeral for Viola Shearod "Coonie" Crawford will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Elm Grove Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Pikeville. The Rev. Kenneth Vaughn will officiate. Burial will be in Turner Swamp Church Cemetery, Eureka.

A Wayne County native, she was the daughter of the late James H.W. "Jim" and Lucinda Shearod and was the widow of Leslie Crawford Sr. She was an active member of Elm Grove Disciple Christ Church, ushering and singing in the choir as long as her health permitted. She visited the sick and attended so many funerals that she became known as "the funeral lady."

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, James Crawford and David Lee Crawford.

She is survived by five daughters, Susie Shearod Watson of Washington, D.C ., Minster Linda P. Nickson and Bertha Artis of Goldsboro, Shirley Bell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Wilma Langston of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Willie Lee Crawford Sr. (Walleta) and Leslie Crawford (Marie); 29 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law , Florence Crawford (James.); and a host of other relatives and friends.

The viewing hours will be from 3 until 8 p.m. Friday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel in Goldsboro, and family will be present to receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friends and relatives may also call at 118 Kelly Court, N.E., in Goldsboro.
