Cleo Peoples House, 93, a retired school teacher, died earlier this month at her home in Columbia, Maryland.
A Goldsboro native, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida Mae Morrissey Peoples and the widow of Edward Apollo House. She graduated from Dillard High School, worked her way through college at Hampton University in Hampton, Va., and received a master's degree from the University of Connecticut.
She began teaching and coaching at the Kenansville High School in Duplin County in 1931 and later taught and coached in the Goldsboro schools. She moved to Columbia, Md., in 1968 and accepted a teaching position at Waterloo Middle School and later Oakland Mills Middle School. She retired from the Howard County Public School System in 1975. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Columbia and a former member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Goldsboro. She also was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge, the United Organization of the Women's Civic Club, the Omega Wives Club, Hampton University Alumni Club and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
She is survived by two sons, Hugh Apollo House and James Earl House, and their families.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 13, at St. John Baptist Church. Burial was in Columbia Memorial Park.
