Died Jan. 19, 2006

Vance Monroe Kelly, 80, formerly of 224 Banks Ave., died Thursday at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa.

Born in Lenoir County, he was the son of the late Emerson and Everline Wilson Kelly and husband of the late Jesse Corey Kelly.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Steve Kelly and Mike Kelly.

He attended the New Life Baptist Church, and was a retired veteran of the United States Navy, having served aboard the U.S.S. Randolph. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Ribbon, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with a Europe Clasp.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. today from the Chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, Goldsboro. The Rev. J. Lewis will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Kelly is survived by a son and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and wife, Betty Kelly, of Ankeny, Iowa, Becky Kelly of Goldsboro, Loretta Kelly of Clayton; a brother, Rayford Kelly of Kinston; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
