GREENVILLE -- Sarah Mae Jones, 81, died Saturday at her home.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Miss Jones was a graduate of Greenville High School and East Carolina Teachers College where she was a member of Pi Omega Pi Honorary Business Fraternity. Upon graduation, Miss Jones accepted the position of Chief Office Deputy with the Pitt County Sheriff's Department, a position she held for 42 years. At the time of her retirement, she held the record for having been employed for the longest period of time in the Pitt County system. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Miss Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Captain Lester Jones and Sarah Piver Jones, and her sister and brother-in-law, Thelma Jones Dodds and Thornton A. Dodds.
She is survived by one sister, Evelyn Jones Heidenreich, and her husband, Ralph, of Goldsboro; four nieces, Margaret Ellen Heidenreich of Greenville, Jan H. Fly, and husband , Ron, of Rocky Mount, Linda Dodds of Greenville, and Lynn D. Hatton and her husband, Larry, also of Greenville; two nephews, James R. Heidenreich, and wife, Joanne, of Goldsboro and Thornton Lester Dodds, of San Angelo, Texas; two great-nieces, Jennifer L. White and Sarah Kate White; three great-nephews, Matthew H. Lamm, James R. Heidenreich Jr., and Joshua R. Heidenreich.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence, 2910-C Mulberry Lane in Forbes Woods.
