Edna Gurley Thomas, 87, of 1455 N.C. Hwy. 581 North, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Wayne County on November 26, 1918 to the late William E. Gurley and Jenny Crocker Gurley, and was married to the late Cooper Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Nahunta School and had attended Atlantic Christian College. She was a farmer in the Nahunta community and later worked with Nahunta Pork Center as a bookkeeper for twenty years. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Nahunta Friends Church.

A funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Nahunta Friends Church. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Woodruff and husband, Martin of West Jefferson; her sons, Jimmy Thomas and wife, Barbara of Pikeville and Donald Thomas and wife, Carolyn of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Buddy Thomas, Kim Thomas, Donna Graham and husband, David, Paula Foley and husband, Eric, Corey Thomas and Donnie Thomas; eight great-grandchildren; six nieces and one nephew.

Although flowers are welcome, memorials may be made to Nahunta Friends Church Building Fund, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.

Pallbearers will be Larry Pierce, Freddie Pierce, Charlie Massengill, Allen Sasser, Gregory Peele and Donnie Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Pierce, Bill Crawford and James Ray Johnson.

The family will receive friends today from 1:30 until 3 p.m. at Nahunta Friends Church and other times at her home.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home.
