KINSTON -- Sol Schechter, 89 died on Tuesday.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Temple Israel, 1109 West Vernon Avenue.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Schechter was president of Hampton Industries until 1994. He was chairman of the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, and later chairman of the LMH Foundation Board of Trustees. Over a 42-year period, he was instrumental in the building and operation of the hospital. He helped establish the Kinston Community Health Center, and was chairman of the board. As chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, he led its drive to build a community service center. He was president of the congregation of Temple Israel for 31 years, and president of the Kiwanis Club. He was chairman of the Lenoir County Interracial Committee; the Good Neighbor Council; the United Way Campaign; and the Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. He served on the Redevelopment Commission, and the boards of the American Red Cross; the Cancer Fund; the Heart Fund; the Lenoir County Vocational Education Center; and the Wachovia Bank.

The Kinston Chamber of Commerce named Mr. Schechter as the Outstanding Citizen of 1971, and in 1995, the Kinston City Council presented Mr. Schechter and his wife, Pearl, a key to the city in recognition of their community service and leadership.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schechter is survived by a son, Arnold Schechter of Chapel Hill; and a sister, Janet Friedman of Orlando, Fla.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Edwards Funeral Home, 702 North Queen Street.
