Lowell Delaney Sharrett, 89, began his rest Sunday at home with his family in Dudley.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with a visitation one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Sharrett was born in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and was the son of Delaney H. and Cora E. Huffman Sharrett. A veteran of WWII, he served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force and retired as a major. He continued to serve his country for an additional 25 years as a quality control inspector for the Department of Defense. During his military career, he served with distinction and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in the Pacific during WWII. In addition, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, an Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Medal with three clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. Sharrett was an avid woodworker. He enjoyed building clocks in his spare time and received the Golden Hammer award from Mechanics Illustrated for an original clock design.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Witherington Sharrett; three children, two brothers, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grand children.
