DUDLEY -- A memorial service for William Lawrence Joyner, 88, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Mr. Joyner died Monday at Cape Fear Hospice Life Care Center in Wilmington.

A resident of Spring Hope, Mr. Joyner spent most of his young life in Dudley, primarily with his grandparents, the late Rev. William A. Clark and Margaret Clark. He graduated from Dudley High School in 1934 and St. Augustine's College in Raleigh in 1939. He served in the United States Navy Medical Corps from 1942 until 1945 and earned his master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947. He was a member of the NAACP, Mu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and the American Legion Post #396 of Spring Hope.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Herleine Pulley Joyner, and their children, Landi Penn of Spring Hope, Dr. William L. Joyner Jr. of Wilmington, Cassandra J. Plater of Brown Summit and Michael Joyner of the home; and four grandchildren.

The family is being served by Adkins-Drain Funeral Service of Wilmington and William Toney's Funeral Home of Spring Hope.
