CRESWELL -- James Marshall "Jimmie" Hopkins Sr., 77, father of Lynne H. Barnes of Goldsboro, died unexpectedly on Wednesday at his residence.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends afterward.

Mr. Hopkins was a native of Tyrell County and was the son of the late Chester L. and Vera Bateman Hopkins. He was a retired farmer, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Creswell Baptist Church.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Frances Peal Hopkins of Creswell; another daughter, Ann H. Woodley of Edenton; one son, James M. "Jimmie" Hopkins Jr. of Nags Head; one sister, Theda H. Hatfield of Tahlequah, Okla.; one brother, Joseph L. Hopkins of O'Fallon, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Maitland Funeral Home is serving the family.
