Dr. Roy Glen Nation, Sr. died Sunday evening, October 9, 2005, surrounded by his family at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, and was raised in Gueydan, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University as a member of the Phi Beta Pi Medical Fraternity and graduated from Medical School in 1960. In the same year, he received his Louisiana Medical License and began to fulfill his destiny as a physician. In 1961, he began his surgical internship at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, La. The following year he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force and served honorably at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base until he was discharged in 1965. He received his North Carolina Medical License in 1965 and began his medical practice at the Hollowell Building in Goldsboro. In that same year he joined the medical staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital. In 1978, he served as Chief of Staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital. In 1976, he moved his medical practice to Herman Street where he faithfully served the good citizens of Wayne County until his retirement on December 31, 2002.

He is best known for his amazing relationship with his patients and staff, remarkable skills as a physician, clever wit, and his love of farming.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Jackson officiating. Internment will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange.

Dr. Nation is survived by his wife, Janice Nation, his children, Cynthia Nation Lowrey and husband Rob of Raleigh, Roy Nation Jr. of Goldsboro and Chris Nation of Goldsboro; his stepchildren, Garrett Walker and Karen Vinson, both of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Robbie Lowrey, Jessica Lowrey, Becky Vinson, Michelle Perkins, April Vinson, Leslie Walker, Sarah Walker and Danielle Grant; and his great-grandchildren, Karena Vinson, Brianna Perkins, Hannah Crosby and Jimmy Graham.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Nation and Trudy Minchew Nation, and his adopted mother, Teen Nation.

Dr. Nation will be remembered for his generosity, his playful humor, and his fun-loving character. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, colleagues and family.

Memorials may be made in his memory to Freedom Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 Country Day Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his residence.
